Fields

by Michelle O'Sullivan

All your life those fields
Were you.
Even the names
You gave them:
The Meadow
Mary Garland’s
The Barracks
Pat Jim’s
The Mountain
You never left them,
Dug stones and
Made walls,
Put cattle out to
Pasture, mares out
To foal.
The earth of those fields
Still under your nails,
On your skin and
In my bones.
