WHISTLING SHADE

"Ein Fichtenbaum steht einsam"

by Heinrich Heine

(translated by Phillip A. Ellis)

A fir-tree stands all alone
in the north, upon a height.
He's sleepy; the ice and snow
wrap round in a blanket white.

He's dreaming of a palm-tree
   far in the east, alone,
who grieves within the silence
on a blazing cliff of stone.
