Second Semester Hesiod

by Sean Lause

The cloud invented the eye
so it could watch itself wander.
The tree invented the ear
so it could hear itself sigh.

The body invented the mind
so it could feel its deepest motions.
The mind invented the earth
to bind itself to the real.

Death invented life
to calm its troubled nerves.
The heart invented footprints
to find its way home.

The river invented lips
to taste the wonder of thirst.
Silence invented the word
so it would no longer be alone.
