WHISTLING SHADE

Out of Time

by Patti Sullivan

It took that one spot of dried blood
on the domed crystal of his watch
to dissolve the lump lodged in her throat

She held it in her palm
wondered on its journey
how many others had handled it

was it the policeman
the nurse the intern
whoever is in charge of such things
after such things happen

the only evidence that it had been anywhere
other than a walk in the park
a trip to the grocery store

that tiny tear drop shape of a person's essence
almost held in amber

he'd never be late again
