Slough

by Daniel Bourne

Cracked mud, the spiders skittering

Beneath the blessing of shade. Water striders

Practicing their language, practicing their language

By the rotting branches of a sycamore.

A frog with its eyes bulging

Up through the duckweed.

Just one move

and I will never see this life again.
