Dead Woodchuck

by Matthew J. Spireng

A woodchuck lies on the road

on its back, front legs like little arms

at rest on its chest as if it is laid out

for a funeral. Soon the mourners

will come. Vultures will bow their heads

over and over as they honor the dead.
