Van Gogh’s Sunflowers Are Wilting

by Meredith Davies Hadaway

...chrome yellow has a nasty habit of browning as it ages.

-Kassia St. Clair, The Secret Life of Color

Perhaps he knew his crazy yellow couldn't

last, would not hold its hue in a world

of harsh light and fickle pigment.

Fugitive is what we say of things that

do not last—the color of certain blondes and

sunken treasure. Every yellow rushes toward

the chemistry of loss. On another hill, saffron

winks from a crown of crocus.
