Hunger

by Jo-Anne Cappeluti

               for GED

It's lunch time, and her husband

is gone

but she listens for him

like she’s done since she buried him

remembering their ice-skating date

ages ago, how he had disappeared with their lunch

right before noon and how hungry she was

searching for him through the cold

then hearing him shout

Over here!

then how they sat in the back of his van

devouring sandwiches

then each other

and over the years

how often he’d appear out of nowhere

and share what he had—
